Wegovy® is a new weight loss treatment. This injectable GLP-1 medication, which contains semaglutide, works in tandem with your healthy lifestyle and exercise routine to support your weight loss goals by reducing appetite and cravings.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy® (semaglutide) is an effective injectable medication that helps people with a BMI of 30 or over lose weight. It’s also an option for those with a BMI of 27 or over who have weight-related health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart problems or Type 2 diabetes.

How effective is Wegovy as a weight loss treatment?

Wegovy is an effective weight loss treatment approved by the MHRA. Studies have shown that users, on average, lose 15% of their body weight while using the medication.

Who might be able to use the Wegovy Pen for weight loss?

Wegovy® is a prescription weight-loss injection designed for adults with a Body Mass Index, BMI, of 30 or higher. If you have weight-related health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol, you may be eligible with a BMI of 27 or higher.

How does Wegovy work?

The active ingredient in Wegovy® is semaglutide, which mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1). This hormone helps regulate appetite and promotes feelings of fullness, contributing to weight loss.

What are the potential side effects of Wegovy?

Some people may experience common side effects when starting Wegovy®, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. These side effects are typically temporary and should subside within a few weeks as your body adjusts to the medication.

What are the available strengths of Wegovy?

To minimise potential side effects, Wegovy® is started at a low dose of 0.25mg once a week. This dose is gradually increased every four weeks until you reach the maintenance dose of 2.4mg per week. This gradual approach allows your body to adjust to the medication and helps improve tolerability. The available strengths are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg.

How long is the Wegovy treatment?

Wegovy® is intended as a long-term treatment for weight loss and weight maintenance, supporting you alongside healthy lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. It’s important to remember that sustaining weight loss after stopping Wegovy® requires continued commitment to a healthy lifestyle, which includes making lasting changes to your diet and regularly engaging in physical activity.
